VP Engineering

Preferable Location(s): Toronto, Canada | St. John's, Canada | New York, United States of America
Work Type: Full Time

ℹ️ About Us:

We're on a mission to make legal services more affordable & accessible while helping lawyers do more of the work they love.

In 2022, we launched Spellbook, the first generative AI copilot for lawyers, quickly growing to nearly 2000 law firms and raising $30m USD in two financing rounds. [1] [2]

Spellbook helps lawyers quickly draft language, flag risks, and derive insights from legal docs. It’s kind of like GitHub Copilot for lawyers.

We’re excited to bring ambitious teammates onboard who are passionate about building, adding real customer value, getting their hands dirty, and sweating the small stuff.

‍💻 About the Role:

Reporting directly to the CEO, you will be responsible for leading and expanding our Engineering team. You will be tasked with driving technical vision, setting short & long term strategy, and guiding the team in implementing cutting-edge features & infrastructure. Like the rest of our leadership team, you will act as a player-coach and demonstrate the same level of comfort getting your hands dirty with execution as with working at the management level. You will have a keen understanding of how engineering efforts drive business goals, recognizing when to reduce complexity & scope and encourage a sense of urgency.

In this role, you will play a critical role in shaping the product, culture, and ultimately, the company.

🔑 Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the engineering team in delivering new value to Spellbook users
  • Lead all software & infrastructure operations
  • Hire, mentor, and manage a team of talented & ambitious engineers. Maintain an extremely high bar.
  • Maintain a fast-moving, action-oriented, collaborative “builder culture” (we are the opposite of a 0% interest startup)
  • Know when to cut corners and be scrappy to outmaneuver competitors. Know when to do things “the right way” and pay off technical debt. Help the team determine which is the case.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team & CEO to determine the technical vision and direction of the company
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards and best practices
  • Collaborate with the Product team to define and prioritize roadmap and milestones
  • Ensure the scalability, maintainability, reliability, and performance of Spellbook
  • Represent Engineering across the business and collaborate with Customer Success, Sales, Operations, Marketing, and other departments
  • Manage the engineering budget and resources to ensure that the team has the tools and support they need to be successful, and deliver software that our customers love
  • Communicate opportunities & threats to the CEO, fellow leadership, and when needed, the board

🎓 Qualifications:

We're looking for someone with a proven track record of delivering results and 5-7+ years of experience in Engineering leadership at high-growth startups.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field
  • Deep understanding of modern technology stacks and cloud infrastructure
  • Proven track record of managing and scaling high-performing engineering teams
  • Experience with distributed teams and async communication
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Passionate about delivering a world class user experience
  • You care deeply about the customer, not just the technology

👀 What We Look For:

  • You’re a builder at heart. You just can’t help but to create things, and your spirit is contagious.
  • You’ve got startup experience. You have experience at a high growth startup, in managing a roster of engineers, and in delivering on a complex roadmap.
  • You’re a customer first leader, and have a deep desire to create amazing customer experiences.
  • You play to win, understanding that only 1 in 1000 startups delivers venture scale returns—and what it takes to be 1 in 1000.
  • You’re an owner. You will define what great looks like in this role. This means that you need to ensure nothing falls through the cracks, you are proactive in everything you do, and that whatever comes across your desk is better-off by the time you're done with it.
  • You’re an excellent communicator. You have the ability to convey complex ideas and information clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.
  • Multi-threaded. You are able to manage multiple priorities with a high level of attention to detail.
  • High clock speed. You can manage, execute and communicate a very fast speed.
  • Extreme agility. You are comfortable dealing with ambiguity and reacting to the market in realtime rather than over-planning.
  • Get shit done, bias for action. You have a strong sense of urgency and are able to move quickly.

🎁 Perks:

  • Work with an olympic-class team
  • Own a piece of the pie; as a crucial early leader you will be granted generous stock options
  • Generous paid time off
  • Autonomy and responsibility; we measure ourselves on results and let you determine how you get the job done
  • Flexible work environment; join us in the heart of downtown Toronto at our Yonge & Dundas office, the award-winning Genesis Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland, or wherever you feel you get your best work done
